Teaching your Children to Save
By: Jason Cunningham
The importance of savings should be passed
along to your children. It can have great affect on how they approach money.
Therefore beginning early on, can lead your child to pick these good habits.
Saving money is a lifestyle not a chore, such
as cleaning your room. Your children need to understand from the beginning,
"money does not grow on trees." Having them to contribute their allowance or
birthday money to a savings account is not enough. Review the monthly statement
with your child. Explain why the account goes up based on the interest earned.
Just taking the money to the bank does not provide that extra step in the
learning process.
When you allow your children to spend all of
the money, they will be reluctant to save. It is similar to giving your child
apple juice all their life, and expecting them to drink water. Setting a child's
expectations regarding money, can be an underlying explanation to their thoughts
and behavior towards money later in life. If a child believes they will always
be given money, they could less enthusiastic about working to earn a living.
Choosing to instill good savings habits in
your child, may be a driving force towards success in life. If they learn to
value money, they will be less likely to waste it and more resourceful and
making it. Challenge your child for their education and future.
