Terrorism & The Inner City
By: Jason Cunningham (07/15/2005)
When I drive home to my apartment in the suburbs,
there are never drug dealers standing on the corner waiting to make a deal. Now
common sense tells me, there are drug dealers living around me. Yet the drug
sense in many inner cities is down right ridiculous. Generally there is less of
a police presence in these areas. Drug dealers may stand on the corner for
hours, both day and night.
We all think about the threat of terrorism. One of
the sources of funding terrorist activities is through the trafficking of
illegal drugs. This whole notion of protecting our borders from illegal
immigrants who threaten to do bodily harm against the United States should also
include ridding the inner city of drugs. There is no telling how much money is
made on a daily basis by terrorists, because of these illegal drugs.
By
letting certain areas fall into economic ruin, we have undoubtedly made our own
limbs less protected.
To me, a terrorist is anyone who
threatens public safety. We do not need to only look at the acts of those who
bomb innocent people or spread a message of hate. Where people do not feel safe
to walk the streets is a place of hostility. Whose to say, a terrorist is not
the drug supplier that spreads poison in our communities. Yet some of us blame
the people in the community, or are willing to state, "it's alone there problem
to fix." As Americans, we have to change our mentality and begin to look at the
whole picture, starting right here at home.
