This is No Controversy in the
2005 ALCS!
By: Jason Cunningham (10/14/2005)
The American League Championship turned into
a spectacle of controversy as the curtain closed on Game 2 of the best of seven
series. A.J. Pierzynski of the Chicago White Sox swung at strike three, but Los
Angeles Josh Paul dropped the ball, and threw the ball back to the mound,
thinking that game was officially over. In actuality, Paul let the ball hit the
ground, and therefore should have tagged A.J. Pierzynski, or threw the ball to
first to end the inning. The umpire Doug Eddings never stated the A.J was out at
the plate. Joe Crede's doubled in A.J. Pierzynski as the Chicago White Sox won
2-1 over the Angels.
Nobody should cry for the Los Angeles
Angels. First of all, people are trying to assume the Angels would have
automatically won the game, but for the "so-call controversial call" in the
ninth inning involving opposing catchers, Josh Paul and A.J. Pierzynski.
Also, blame needs to fall on Josh Paul and the rest of his teammates. All Paul
had to do was tag the runner or attempted to give the ball to the Umpire Eddings
and he would have realized that the ball was still in play.
If the White Sox win the series,
how Game 2 ended should not be considered the root cause of their success
against the Angels. The team from Los Angeles had nine separate at bats to get
the job done in Chicago, and go up in the series 2-0. It did not happen, the
series is even, and we will see tonight if the Angels are focused and can regain
the lead in this best of seven series.
