Thoughts on Abortion
By: Jason Cunningham (10/10/2004)
I hope one day, that all people will choose not to have an
abortion. However, I do not think that making the act illegal is the answer.
There are other factors that must be considered and explored thoroughly, in
regards to this sensitive subject.
Somebody asked me recently, "Do I think abortion is murder?" I
pondered on the question and gave the person a firm answer of yes. Yet I turned
the tables on that person and questioned whether capital punishment could be
considered murder as well. The person buckled and said no. The basis for this
line of reasoning is because it builds on the foundation of my argument of what
constitutes murder. If one cannot create life, but takes away life, this is
murder. So abortion as well as capital punishment clearly falls within the scope
of my definition. None of us are God!
In the case of those who have an abortion, why do you not seek
prosecution against them? Our legal system should be used to protect us against those
who purposely attempt to defraud, cause chaos, and commit violent crimes. If a
women is raped or could die from continuing a pregnancy, and decides to have an
abortion, I cannot say anything in opposition and just offer an hug. The doctors
who perform abortions may do it out of greed or may have had a love one in their life,
who died from trying to perform an abortion themselves without medical
supervision, due to possible condemnation from not being married. Let their
own conscience be their guide, however I refuse to throw stones at them because
of all of my own imperfections.
Why do I say the abortion issue is complicated? First there are
a number of reasons why a woman may choose to have the procedure done. It is not
always a birth control issue, however you would never figure that, based
on the protesters' language in front of abortion clinics. Yet hopefully
these women are able to get the necessary information that will help them make a
decision they can stand by, whether it is having an abortion, or the alternative
which includes having the baby. Also many individuals who are strongly against
abortion do not want their tax dollars to fund abortion clinics, doctors, etc.
Honestly, when I consider all of the issues that could explain why that woman is
in that clinic or doctor's office; so be it if some of my tax dollars go there.
If people want to ban abortion here is my challenge to them: Please write
your people in Congress, state legislation, mayor, and President of the United
States and tell them you do not want tax dollars earned by abortion doctors,
hospitals, and clinics performing them in your state and country to go to
communities, pay for your Medicare or Social Security payment, and improve your
schools. Why wash your hands like Pontius Pilate, when you have the opportunity
to wash your hands completely clean!
People should always try to look at the world from all angles
and not just the ones they have already picked out. Abortion is an issue that
has truly divided the United States. Yet I am one liberal, who does not attempt
to define when life begins, other than by the joining of the egg and sperm.
Individuals get upset when a little portion of their tax money goes to pay for
the development and welfare of young children, who otherwise could have been
aborted. It
does amaze me that individuals who protest abortion with religious vigor do not
do the same for cigarettes, which cause death and massive healthcare costs in
the United States! Why is this not a moral issue like abortion?
