Thoughts on Brooke Valentine's D-Girl

By: Jason Cunningham (8-2-2006)

A couple of months ago, I heard a song by singer Brooke Valentine that alarmed me. The title of the song is D-Girl. After listening to the single, I paused for a second. I could not believe that Brooke Valentine made a song about being a dope girl.

Some people are going to think that I am being hard on a female. No, I am just shocked that someone with Brooke Valentine's talent would waste a good beat on a song with a ridiculous message. A lot of hip-hop records may talk about drug use, but when did someone decide that being a dope girl is something worthy.   A dope girl profits from man selling drugs, while families become broken, children become addicted, and the employment rate goes up, as a result of these drugs infecting our communities.

Unlike movies, some people really believe their favorite music artists are speaking to him or her through their music. It would be wise if more people see these artists as actors.  Nevertheless, the song D-Girl is going to be a mega-hit. In my opinion, it has a beat made by Pimp C that is a classic. The singing by Brooke Valentine is amazing. However, I wished she had used these vocals on another topic. The video tells the story of the song, and she has never looked better. If you never seen Brooke Valentine before, she is a vision of beauty.

I do believe in the First Amendment. So, I am not calling for boycott of Brooke Valentine. This is America, even if I disagree with the message of the song. Censorship will not rid our communities of dope girls!
