Thoughts on the NBA Dress Code
By: Jason Cunningham (10/20/2005)
I agree with the NBA's decision to
enforce the dress code. It is necessary to change to the image of the players in
the league, and it starts with what you wear. If you have a job, then you need
to adhere by the rules of the office.
It is amazing that any NBA players
would complain about wearing a suit. If they plan on going into broadcasting or
coaching after their playing days, then this will be the expected dress
code. Would you go to a four star restaurant in some sneakers and a white
t-shirt? How about Church, okay if you attend mine you can dress down? Normally, people in our society go to jobs that have a dress
code. Most people accept the attire required for the job and move on.
NBA players who complain about the rule
change need to put themselves in role of owner. As the head of an organization,
I have tickets, advertisements, press boxes, t-shirts, mugs, and jerseys
to sell in order to pay these players salaries, and still make a profit. You are
selling a product through the team's play on the court as well as through their
charity work. The last thing you want is investors saying no because of
your image. It may not be indicative of how you are as a person, but you do not
come to man's home and ask for his daughter wearing anything less than your
best. The league has a responsibility to uphold its image before any player
cries foul. Besides is anyone being injured by a dress code?
It is hard to believe that anyone will
protest the NBA dress code. Sure there will be snickering, however hip hop is
not going to be harmed in the process. The league needs rappers and other artist
to reach the 10 to 25 year old who buys the jerseys and hats on the street and
to the arena. The dress code will bring a more professional look to the NBA.
