USC's QB Matt Leinart Lost Money Last
Night
By: Jason Cunningham (1/5/2005)
No, I am not implying that USC's
quarterback Matt Leinart bet on the National Championship game. However, the
41-38, lost to the Texas Longhorns showed the country that Texas quarterback,
junior Vince Young may have more upside as a professional football player. I
wonder if Leinart wishes he had left USC after his junior year, when he surely
would have been chosen #1 overall in the 2005 NFL Draft.
To all you defenders of staying in
college instead of going early in the NFL Draft; this semester, Matt Leinart
took Ball Room Dancing as his only enrolled class. He probably should taken
basket weaving and golf over the summer to complete his degree. We all know that
his teammate Reggie Bush will be the first player chosen in the 2006 NFL Draft.
So, will Matt Leinart go second in the Draft? I truly doubt it, because
Texas quarterback Vince Young will enter the draft, and will be chosen second;
if he wants to get paid now. I guess a year can really make a difference. Young
should thank Leinart and Bush for all of their hype that allowed him to play for
the National Championship under a tremendous spotlight. To Young's credit, he
shined brighter than Matt Leinart in Texas' Rose Bowl Win, and he will be
rewarded in dollars this fall.
Matt Leinart got caught up in the hype.
He is living a college fantasy of not doing homework and being the "Big Man on
Campus." Leinart believed he was going to win a second Heisman Trophy and a
third straight National Championship. Neither one of these things materialized
for Leinart. His hopes and dreams of more were dashed by the blazing
passing and running of Vince Young. Now it appears Vince will make more money
than him; initially, at the next level in the NFL. Leinart gambled with his
career, but at least he did not get injured throughout his senior season.
