The War over Prescription Drug Costs
By: Jason Cunningham (5/12/2005)
In the 2004 Presidential Election,
Senator John Kerry suggested if elected President then he would research the
possibility of buying seniors prescriptions drugs from Canada. We all know
President Bush defeated him in November, but should the issue just fade away in
the sunset? Are Americans being taken advantage of by big business?
If you remember President Bush's
response to purchasing drugs from Canada had to do with his concern for our
safety. He appeared to be interjecting that buying prescription drugs from our
brothers and sisters up North could present some unforeseen dangers. No
matter what your political affiliation, Bush needs to be more precise in his
answer, in regards to why United States citizens cannot purchase their
prescription drugs in Canada at a cheaper price. Lily and Pfizer are
definitely selling their drugs in Canada. We are not talking about getting
prescriptions filled over the internet where you might really be taking a
chance, but in a legitimate drug store.
I know that drug companies enjoy a
greater profit margin if US citizens make their purchases here as opposed to
Canada. This is no great secret. However when poor people have to choose between
their medicine and eating, then we as a nation have a problem. Some of us are in
very comfortable in our situations, and do not know what is like to be hungry.
Yet it is inhumane and immoral in my mind, not have a national program where the
American people, at least have the opportunity to purchase their drugs at the
cheapest prices available. If we can buy electronics at cheap prices, why are
prescriptions not getting the same consideration?
