Was it Wrong to Be Political at Coretta Scott King's
Funeral?
By: Jason Cunningham (2/08/2006)
Some people are angered by the political tone at Coretta
Scott King's funeral. There is evidence that individuals believe it became a
Democratic rally. While many of those who were offended by some of yesterday's
comments probably support President Bush, we still should be vigil in uniting
the country.
At any funeral, I believe the wishes of the dead should be
carried out. If such a life as the great Coretta Scott King was about the
politics of freeing the oppressed, then no harm should be interpreted by the
words of those who call for further freedoms for all. Rev. Joseph Lowery talked
about the lack of evidence for the War in Iraq, and former President Jimmy
Carter commented on wiretapping of King's during the time of the Hoover FBI, as
it parallels to President Bush's government surveillance program of today. In my
opinion, neither individual stepped over the line. This funeral was a
celebration of a true non-violence freedom fighter, unlike those who laud war as
a first option. Therefore it was fitting for the audience be reminded of the
battles that Coretta Scott King fought against and would be tackling if able
today!
I believe some of President Bush's supporters did
appreciate the sharp comments about his lack of leadership. Like it or not,
people do not always say what you want to hear at a funeral. However, I've heard
no one state the Coretta Scott King would not have appreciated all of the
speeches, dance, and poems read at her service.
