Who Cares About the
NHL?
By: Jason Cunningham (2/23/2005)
There is something to said about the NHL's cancellation
of the 2004-2005 season. That regardless of what owners and players try to
project to the media and public, it is about dollars and cents. It is a constant
theme found in all businesses, however a sport's franchise, unlike other
companies, is supposed to be an ambassador for the city.
It is now pretty safe to safe that
there will be no NHL hockey played until the fall of 2005. The players really do
not want a salary cap, and I cannot blame them. However the owners are only
willing to pay a certain level of salary, and I cannot disagree with that as
well. The question I must pose to the plays is this, "Would you rather
make a 1 million dollars a year, or possibly $45,000 a year working a 9 to 5
job. People in society make sacrifices so that they can put food on their table.
Yes, we all want to make more money, because we believe we are underpaid,
but you players are leaving money on the table that you cannot make up.
The reason no one cares about the NHL, in my
opinion has to do with improved TV ratings by shows, which are in time slots
normally reserved by hockey. ESPN can show one of their made for TV movies, or
women's basketball and achieve greater ratings than a NHL game on average. Just
seeing If players are worried about their salaries now, there may be even
more concern if sponsors are willing to pay less for NHL advertisements. Hey
guys, you can only play in the NHL for so long, before old age forces you into
retirement.
