Why are Some Churches
Canceling Christmas Service?
By: Jason Cunningham (12-25-05)
Today is considered the birthday of Jesus
Christ, the son of God, according to most individuals who classify themselves as
Christians. Later on today, I am going to Church; however to my surprise, some
Churches around the nation, have cancelled their services so members can spend
time with their families!
Maybe I am wrong for saying cancelling
Church today gives people a reason to say Happy Holidays, instead of Merry
Christmas. Today is supposed to be about Jesus and not about the food you eat,
the egg nog you may drink, or the presents you may open! At least this the
message that has been repeated over and over again throughout my lifetime. By
canceling Church today, essentially you are proving the naysayers right;
Jesus is not reason for the season! The Christmas holiday to some has
become a guilt free excuse for a commercial whirlwind and the opportunity to
visit friends and family.
I have read online some of the reasons
people are canceling Church today, including time to visit troops who came
home for the holidays. Maybe some of the troops want to go to Church to see
people they have not seen in a while or to thank God in a familiar place?
Do we not wish to hear their remarkable stories of courage or rescue? My
favorite excuse is we sent our congregation a DVD service, so do not bothering
showing up today! Besides, some of these Churches are not even liberal or
moderate congregations. Furthermore, some of these Church Pastors or
congregation members would probably be offended today, if I told them Happy
Holidays instead of Merry Christmas, yet they are taking the day off from
Church. Does this make sense to anymore?
Is not Christmas one of the Holiest
days in the Christian faith? The answer is of course yes. However those who
cancel Church today, why should people come to your Church if there is no
service on Christmas, the date of Jesus' birth? Throughout the year people in
the Church speak of sacrifice, but some today have decided to forgo the Church
experience for time at home. What type of message is being sent by a Church on
the birthday of Jesus, that does not celebrate it together? People need to
take a second look, in my opinion, otherwise they are just being mentally
suckered by the hierarchies of their Church.
