Why Calling for Peace is Less Than
Patriotic!
by Jason Cunningham (11-19-06)
From grade school through college, our history books often
praise those who fight in wars. Generally, this is not the same fate for those
who protest against them. In many cases, people that dissent to wars are
considered unpatriotic.
During wartime, individuals seem to rally around the flag. Many
people blindly support government sponsored wars without considering the issues.
Often, these citizens are unable to articulate the necessity of this particular
conflict, but believe it is patriotic to get behind the military effort.
In the United States, many people consider themselves to be
Christians or followers of the Biblical Jesus Christ. By all present
accounts, Jesus was a man of peace and considered to be the "Son of God" by many
followers of the Christian tradition. Even in the moments prior to his death,
Jesus forgave his enemies and dared not to destroy them. However, I find
it ironic that we consider those who speak of peace without war as unpatriotic
and cowards.
There is nothing wrong with wanting peace throughout the world.
I believe that it is vital, in order to support global stability. People who
protest against war do not deserve the label of being unpatriotic. Remember,
wars produce heroes, but they also generate broken dreams and dead bodies.
