Why Do Some Rappers Promote Drug Use?

By: Jason Cunningham (5/6/2005)

If there is one criticism I have of some rappers, or hip-hop artists is the fact that some in their songs promote illegal drug use. I am not saying they need to be your children's role models other than many of them possess extraordinary work ethic. Still the fact remains they would probably be wiser to speak about something else in their lyrics.

My main fear is that these rappers can basically cause a police investigation, because of a verse in a song, even if it is just considered entertainment to the artist and their record label. It is one thing to be in a movie or on a TV show and portraying illegal drug use, but the reality is that many people assume many parts of rap songs come directly from the artist's experience.

Some rap artists have foundations and charities that are helping inner city youth, and I would hate to see those kids let down, due to a lyric in a song. Whether some care to admit it, hip-hop artists are often among the best business people in the black community. Therefore their ideas and visions need to captivated in their work in the studio as well in the outside world, and not behind bars. I encourage rappers and hip-hop artists not to promote illegal drug use, for none of us can benefit from that message.
