Why Insurance Agents
Need More Education!
By: Jason Cunningham (2-12-2006)
I believe the insurance
industry does a good job of promoting further education for agents. While almost
every insurance agent in America is subject to minimum continuing education
requirements, each individual must decide whether to become more knowledgeable
in a particular subject matter or pursue an insurance designation. In my
opinion, education in any line of work separates the best from the rest; however
in the insurance business, it can be the difference between feast or famine.
There are many education
courses and classes to pursue as an insurance agent. You might to take classes
toward getting an industry designation such as a CLU, CFP®,
and ChFC. By gaining knowledge through these courses, you will begin to learn
more about the insurance process, and this should eventually translate into
better service for your clients. Anything and everything to improve the quality
of your work should be encouraged and respected by your peers and insurance
regulators. Clearly, there is a necessity to provide correct information to
insurance customers, because in the absence of sound advice, underinsurance may
cause financial hardship and overinsurance often leads to a lack of funding in
other needed areas.
Some people will not do
business with you, unless you have certain credentials. At the minimum, they
might expect you to have an industry designation such as the CFP® or a
Masters degree in Financial Planning. If you want to pursue this type of
aristocratic clientele, then you must have the proof of education stamped on
your wall. One big client can be the difference between a comfortable living and
struggling to make ends meet. Even so, those new in the industry not only need
people to see, but credibility to back him or her up. Education is the constant
equalizer.
Unlike some industries,
rules and regulations are constantly updated due to state and occasional
federal regulation. Therefore regardless of continuing education requirements,
every agent needs to stay current on issues concerning their fields of
insurance, whether it be in the area of Medicare, Social Security, or nursing
home regulation, etc. The insurance industry is constantly revolving; so change
is inevitable.
Education is vital to your
career in the insurance industry. There is always something new to learn, as a
result of changes in rules and regulation. Some clients expect their financial
representatives to have certain education requirements that may include the CFP®
or a Masters degree in Financial Planning.
