Why Larry Brown is No Traitor!

By: Jason Cunningham (7/24/2005)

Ever since last week, when it was officially announced, Larry Brown would no longer be the coach of the Detroit Pistons, sports fans have been letting him having it. The idea of a coach with three years on his contract, leaving a team who has been in the NBA Finals for the last two years, seems to be an exercise in disloyalty.

While Larry Brown and the Detroit Pistons have different stories about how their business relationship ended, the burden of the public anger is all focused on Brown. Regardless of what really happened, Larry Brown should not be considered a traitor. The Detroit Pistons won the NBA Championship during the 2003-2004 season. He took the team to the NBA Finals for two straight years. It would have been different if the Pistons had not enjoyed the success that occurred during Brown's coaching stay.
