Why Roy Jones Jr. Legacy is not Tarnished!

by: Jason Cunningham (09/25/2004)

Even though Roy Jones Jr., lost his third boxing fight of his career, and second straight by knockout, however his legacy as a legendary boxer will not tarnished by his recent defeats. Last night, Light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson in the ninth round, put Jones down for the ten count, and he was later taken to the hospital as a precaution.

People will remember that Roy Jones Jr. as a great fighter who had an amazing run.  The first loss of Jones' career was because of a controversial disqualification after hitting  Montell Griffin on a knee. The self-prophesized great one, Jones knocked out Virgil Hill with one of the greatest body blows in boxing history.

Jones has not ducked fighters in his career, including a memorable fight he won in a 12 round decision against my favorite boxer, Bernard Hopkins in 1993. Yet fighting heavyweight, John Ruiz took a lot out of the boxing career of Roy Jones Jr. He might have won the fight, but he took some heavy blows that caused me to cringe. Make no mistake, Glen Johnson is no bum as a fighter, he beater Antonio Tarver once, the only other legitimate fighter that ever beat Jones in the square circle. I hope Jones retire, not because he can no longer fight, there is just nothing else left to prove. You are clearly one the greatest boxers in the history of the sport.
