Why School Prayer & Evolution
in Public School should Disappear?
By: Jason Cunningham (5/11/2005)
The movement towards reinstating
school prayer is gaining momentum due to the Bush Administration ability to
reach out to many Republicans who identify themselves as Christians, and the
popularity of faith based initiatives. Evolution is a scientific theory
that says the universe is very old, and animals including humans on earth have
come to our present state of being, through hundreds of thousands years on this
planet.
The public school system should
be used as a place where children can learn civic values, and the basic skills
to get a job and learn how to think. One of the greatest battles facing schools
now, is whether Christianity should be injected into the public school system.
There are those who argue America is in a worse moral state since the Supreme
Court Case Engel v. Vitale, (1962). This case
banned forced prayer in the public school. In that case, Supreme Court
Justice Hugo Black stated," A union of government and religion tends to
destroy government and degrade religion."
Evolution has become a target of some religious
folks, because it gives an account of world history that is in conflict with the
Bible. There are parent who go to PTA meeting just to complain about the subject
mentioned in science class, for the one week in class that it taught each year.
In some school systems they have decided to buy new science textbooks that
reflect "Intelligent Design," in which a divine maker
created us all. Now understand that "Intelligent Design" does not validate
the Creation story in the Bible, but does attempt to explain why there are no
random acts nor natural selection in the formation of world and its inhabitants,
as would a Darwinian might believe.
We need to become the United States instead
of the divided states. Mandated school prayer in the public school system is a
bad idea. What if I am Jewish or Hindu, should my child be subjected to recite
Christian prayers in school? Better yet , would others religions have their
day to say a prayer over the speaker? If you do not let religions have equal
time, then you are basically saying their taxpayer money and faith is less
important than yours. If you want a good regiment of religion for children on
daily basis send them to parochial, as my parent did or another denomination
school. I did attend public school for fifth and sixth grade, and there was
grace said before every meal. Evolution also needs to be put out of public
school. It is not bringing anything important to learning in school. Save it for
college where grown people can make up their own minds.
People may state that the absence of prayer in school has
led to the moral decline of Americans. Maybe the promotion of greed, the
constant bombardment of advertisement towards the youth and teaching less
commitment in society could be a major cause. People are getting married later
and later in life, therefore you have less pure individuals. At one point in
time when people claimed this was a moral society, teenagers being married was a
rite of passage. The average parent is probably spending less time with their
child now, in order to make more money, because kids are way more expensive, in
comparison to what would have been required, even ten years ago when you factor
in inflation. Some fast food restaurants do not offer condiments without you
paying for it. I can remember ten years ago going to certain places and never
had to ask for ketchup or mustard. We hear story upon story of companies not
offering healthcare to their employees, these are desperate times because the
whole picture is not being examined. You think advertisers do not see your
children as buckets of money, if not watch how many commercials are geared
towards them on a any given Saturday.
