Why Show Pictures of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi?

By Jason Cunningham (6/09/06)

Yesterday, I was awaken by the Breaking News surrounding the death of the notorious al-Qaida leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. At noon time, I watched the news again and saw the picture of the dead al-Zarqawi. I disagree with the showing of the photo.

Regardless of how someone lived, we should always respect the dead, including Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.  I do not believe pictures of the dead caused by battle should be shown during times of war. As an American, I do not want to see the body of a dead US soldier shown on CNN or Fox News, while this conflict is still ongoing. No one deserves to see death pictures of their dead friends, colleagues, or relatives on National Television.

I understand some people will remain skeptical without proof. However, there is a need to balance what should be shown in the public media, in regards to the dead. In some people's opinion, we are probably no better than those individuals who murder hostages and make a tape of it, when photos of the dead are released during war. I thought the military would have learned from the death of Saddam Hussein's children, in which pictures of their dead bodies were displayed on TV and the internet. If you want the world to unite then the US must hold itself to a higher moral standard, even if the person was Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
