Why Some Liberals Need to Get off the Christmas Celebration!

By: Jason Cunningham (12-1-05)

I sometimes get sick of those within my liberal community who against anything religious including Christmas. The US Constitution protects us from any Congressional establishment of religion, according to the First Amendment. That is far from implying we should have freedom from religion.

The problem I have with a minority of my liberal brethren, is their desire to alleviate the world of religion in public.  I do not share this viewpoint. It is important that all people who choose to practice religion, have the right to do so, and as long as everyone gets equal time in public areas, then I have no gripes. No where in the Constitution does not mention that individuals should only practice their religion or make references to it at home!

Christmas time should not be part of the calendar year where people need to protest the holidays. No one is getting hurt if their is a manager or Hanukkah themes in a mall or public square. It would not bother me if someone wished me Happy Hanukkah, and I am not Jewish. Actually I would be happy that someone thinks enough of me to greet me in good spirit.

If you do not believe in religion then that is your choice. There is no one beating you over the head trying to covert you or your children, especially me. I am one that believes in the philosophy and virtue of an individual above any religion you might claim to profess. However I recognize the importance of faith and religion as it helps many individuals get through life's pain and suffering. Christmas is an important time of the year for most Christians, and it is also day of rest for most Americans including does who have no religious affiliation.

I pray that my fellow liberals who wish Christmas away; remain mindful of the guarantee of religious freedom that is expressed in the First Amendment. Understand you cannot rid the world of religion, no more than I could convince you of the existence of God if you are atheist, or the reason to study a particular faith if you do not believe in organized religion. Trying to destroy the importance of Christmas is a utter waste of time.
