Why the NCAA Basketball Is My Favorite Sports Tournament?

By Jason Cunningham (3/13/05)

I have been a true sports fanatic ever since birth.  Even though I have not played organized basketball in school since 7th grade, three years of NCAA football and four years of track and fields supplied me with a fine substitute. Yet I must admit, the love in my heart for the Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament is a greater than the NFL, NBA, or MLB playoffs.

First of all, the NCAA Tournament has great terms for its elimination games such as Sweet 16, Elite 8, and Final Four, which sets it apart for other sports,  including baseball and football, which have divisional and conference or league championships. The NCAA Tournament also can give rise to star, who barely played throughout the regular season.  Maybe a star gets injured or a freshman such as Keith Smart,. a former University of Indiana Hoosier who led his team to the NCAA Basketball Championship in 1987.

Since there are going to be upsets in the NCAA Basketball Tournament, no team is ever a lock to win it all. On any given night, a number one or two seed can be defeated, so that reason alone is good enough for me to be glued to the television. Generally in any other sports tourney, the chances of picking the two teams in the final championship are good. College basketball is immune from this logic, because often by the Elite 8 game, half of America will have already torn up their brackets.

Well let us enjoy this year's NCAA Basketball Tournament. I believe that the field of 64 is quite deep, and do not be surprised if a four seed such as Syracuse University makes it to the Final Four. Hold onto your seats folks, this might be the year of the upset.
