Will There Be Two Black Head Coaches in
Superbowl XL?
By: Jason Cunningham (12/27/2005)
I believe this year there will be at
least one black Head Coach leading his team into Superbowl XL. Then again with
the performance of the Chicago Bears lately; do not count Head Coach Lovie
Smith's team out. This will be a monumental victory for minorities, and should
open more doors to coaching opportunities both in college and the NFL.
The Indianapolis Colts lost to the
Seattle Seahawks this past weekend; however, the Colts remain the number team to
beat in the AFC. They should be healthy in three weeks and hopefully Head
Coach Tony Dungy will back with his squad, despite today burying his oldest son,
James Dungy. In my opinion, the Indianapolis Colts have been the most dominating
team in the NFL this season.
Yet there is a team in Cincinnati, Oh,
which would love to avenge a early season loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Long
time, NFL Assistant Coach Marvin Lewis finally has a Head Coaching job with the
Cincinnati Bengals, and he has made the most of the opportunity. The Bengals may
be the Colts biggest threat in the AFC Playoffs; besides the Pittsburgh Steelers
and New England Patriots.
Everyone says defense wins
championships, and the African-American Head Coach of the Chicago Bears,
Lovie Smith's team has allowed the fewest points in the NFL this season.
Remember Smith won a Superbowl Ring as an Assistant Coach of the St. Louis Rams
in Superbowl XXIV versus the Tennessee Titans.
I am pretty confident that a black Head
Coach will be representing the AFC team in this year's Superbowl. Honestly, I
believe the Colts will get it done for Tony Dungy. That team is going to rally
behind their coach during the NFL Playoffs and finally QB Peyton Manning will
prove the naysayers wrong by winning the big game. The Chicago Bears have a
forty percent chance of making the Superbowl, in my opinion. It will be tough
for Lovie Smith's team to get past the red hot Seattle Seahawks, but it is not
an an impossible task for the number number defense.
