Women and their
Opposition to the Presidency
By: Jason Cunningham (1/11/2005)
The Presidency of the United States is one
job, one position that no woman in America has ever held, but when it happens
the country will be furthered elevated in regards to closing the equality gap.
It is one thing to have a woman as a CEO at a few Fortune 500 companies, in
comparison to their male counterparts; however we are talking about announcing
to the world "The First Man or Husband," the day a woman takes the oath of the
highest office of the land.
Everyday, I become more mindful of
the challenges that women face. Whether as mothers, educators, workers, or
citizens, women are heavily involved in our culture and the development of this
great nation. Often in the workplace, women are still paid less than men for the
same position, therefore the strive towards equality is not a dead issue.
A nation that wishes to stand the test
of time must be able to accept leadership regardless of gender. The Presidency
of the United States not only represents this country, but stands as the leader
of the free world. We cannot stand strong, and call ourselves a champion of
human rights and gender equality if the American people are unable to go to the
polls and vote for a woman President. What message would we be sending to young
females in this country? You can grow up and be anything except President. The
very sad story is that some women and ministers preach from the pulpit and
believe that a woman should not hold the top position in this country.
