Culture in the Workplace
By: Jason Cunningham
As a potential or new employee, it is
important to learn the culture of the workplace. Attempt to fit in the culture
of your job, so that you can create, a more stable environment. Your
co-workers can also have an affect on your perception of the job place.
Every workplace has an unique culture. At a
few brokerage firms that come to mind, a bell is ranged to signify the
opening of the market. Siebel Systems requires their employees to wear suits.
Many places have dress down on Fridays. Some places you must address your
superior by their title. The handshakes to begin the day or the singing of the
company's anthem, you are exposed to a culture, unlike you have never
experienced. Learning what to expect at the workplace can prevent heartache and
a resignation along the way. Welcome to the world of the "work culture."
No one is saying that you must assimilate
with the culture at work. However, you need not be angry at it, when you go
home. Your co-workers can do more for your enjoyment at work than the fringe
benefits your employer gives you. When working on projects, it is good to
work with those who know what the boss expects. You must be willing to make an
effort, in order to sustain yourself at the workplace. Going to an occasional
company event will not kill you.
