Worst NFL Call of the Year?
By: Jason Cunningham (10/10/2005)
Darren Sproles of the San Diego Chargers is probably the luckiest man
in the universe. Last night in his team's loss, 24-22 loss to the Pittsburgh
Steelers, he fumbled a punt return, but a penalty on for interference to catch
the ball wiped out the miscue.
How much space did Sproles need to make a fair catch? No one on the
Steelers even came close to impeding his ability to catch the ball. Maybe the
official thought there was interference because of how Darren Sproles got
blasted while losing the football. Nevertheless if the Steelers had lost the
game, then a formal complaint and protest would not have been outrageous.
I hope they review the tape. ABC had every angle to watch the play and
it wasn't close no matter how you spin it. It was a horrendous call and thank
goodness it did not decide the game. Hopefully that crew can get their act
together, because you get my "Worse NFL Call of the Year Award." Pittsburgh
Steelers can rest easy now that they have another win under their belt.
